Eutopia Dollar - 1886
Designed and struck by Nicholas Veeder, Pittsburgh, PA, as model for cometallic coins and medals in effort to show practicality of using both gold and silver in one piece. Veeder had published booklet in 1885 titled "Co-metallism: A Plan for Combining Gold and Silver in Coinage, for Uniting and Blending their Values in Paper Money and for Establishing a Composite Single Standard Dollar of Account."
Reactions at time, both to idea and pattern, were generally unfavorable; some labeled plan "a version of the Goloid dream." Dies are said to have broken on third impression.
Obverse: Sun and rays on gold center insert, beaded circle around; on silver, between this and second beaded circle, Model for Cometallic Coins and Medals; within second beaded circle and beaded border, Republic of Eutopia., around; date, 1886, below, with ornament on each side.
Reverse: On gold center insert, in three lines, first and last curved, second straight, Gold / 12.9/10 / Grains; within beaded circle around center and a second beaded circle, A R G E N T O R U M [letters separated] Silver / 206¼ Grs.,; within second beaded circle and beaded border, the 12 signs of the Zodiac.
HK-1005 - Silver, 32mm, and Gold, 11mm. Size 21.
