Research fails to establish either origin of this medal or nature and extent of "jubilee" celebration which latter obviously must have been limited. Obverse: In center are 3 gold prospectors apparently examining gold nugget in hand of one; to l., partly within scroll, 1848; to r., partly within scroll, 1898; below Gold Discovery / Jan. 24 / San Francisco, Cal.; above all, around Semi-Centennial Jubilee; beaded border.
Reverse: In upper half is covered wagon drawn by team of oxen proceeding l.; two people in wagon and another walking beside oxen; below 1848; in lower half is train proceeding l.; below 1898; beaded border.
